Coping with a flooded home or property is one of the worse experiences you can face. That’s why our team, who know what it is like to be flooded, are here to help and guide you through the process of getting your home and life back to normal as quickly as possible or to help you protect your property
We can also provide support if you find yourself struggling to find who to talk to about a specific flooding problem.
Support to recover from flooding
If you have been flooded you may feel overwhelmed and unsure what to do and who to talk to. Sorting through damaged and destroyed possessions and trying to decide what to keep and what to throw away or even what can be saved is a difficult decision to make. Contacting your insurer (if you are lucky enough to have insurance) and knowing how to even start drying out and cleaning your home can all seem like an unclimbable mountain.
The Scottish Flood Forum can help – if your wider community has been flooded, it is likely that we already have a drop in surgery in your local area; or contact us to find out when we are in your area and we can arrange to drop in to see you. The resources section of our website may give you a helping hand too.
If you live in a flood risk area, finding affordable insurance can be a challenge, even with the FloodRe scheme in place.
Or if you have been flooded, then dealing with insurers and loss adjustors can be difficult, especially in the middle of the emotional stress of having been flooded. Worse still, can be discovering that you were not insured for flooding. We understand how difficult things can be at this time.
The Scottish Flood Forum can help you with finding an insurer. Or if you have been flooded, and don’t have insurance cover, we can give you free advice and help. It is likely that we will be holding drop in centres in your area, or contact us for further details or advice. The resources section of our website may help you too.
Sometimes an independent voice can help find a way through difficult conversations especially if you have been flooded. If you are struggling to have a constructive conversation with the insurance company, the builders, or to talk with the person or organisation you believe is responsible for the flooding; we may be able to help. Our mediation service is considered on a case-by-case basis and we will discuss with you whether we are able to help, and if not suggest alternative options. Just get in touch to discuss further.
Property level flood protection advice
If you want to protect your property, either because you know you live in a flood risk area or because you are repairing your property after flooding, then installing property flood protection measures (PLP) or considering what repairs would help you be more resilient to any future flooding could help you.
Our flood protection guide may help, or, to find indicative costs of installing PLP into your property try our property protection advisor. Once you know what you’d like to do, some suggestions on where to source PLP measures are found in section 3 of this document. If you have taken these steps and would still like to chat with someone, do contact us to talk through your options.
